We're looking back on our former scholarship recipients to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Delta Community Credit Union Scholarship. As our recipients move from college to career, they’re sharing what the scholarship meant in their lives.
In this installment of our 10th anniversary series, we're following up with our 2011 scholarship recipients. In the profiles below, our 2011 winners discuss their adventures, from graduation to law school, and the start of their professional life.
Garrett

Name: Garrett Swenson
School: University of Delaware
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Academic Background: Garrett graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Delaware in May 2015. During his undergraduate career, Garrett received the Mechanical Engineering Alumni Award- Outstanding Senior and the Center for Composite Materials Outstanding Senior Award. He also received several scholarships and a position as a research assistant at the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials.
Where is He Now: Currently, Garrett works as a Mechanical Engineer Associate at Lockheed Martin in the Mission Systems and Training division for the Undersea Systems line of business. Specifically, he is a sonar hardware design engineer for submarines.
Free Time: Garrett is an avid runner. This year he participated with his dad in the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge at Disney World, which involves running a half marathon and a full marathon over the course of two consecutive days. He also stays involved in his work community through the Arc of NOVA Team Running Event and by volunteering at the Lockheed Martin Family Day.

Katherine
Katherine is now working and living in
New York City
Name: Katherine McIntyre
School: University of Georgia
Major: Marketing and Fashion Merchandising
On Campus: Katherine graduated from the University of Georgia in December 2015. During her undergraduate career, Katherine was actively involved in Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and served as social director for her chapter. Since graduating, she has been invited back to UGA to present her research at the Center for Undergraduate Research Symposium in April.
Career Growth: While in school, Katherine completed a marketing internship with Vet-Advantage Magazine in Atlanta and a Global Merchandising Internship with Ralph Lauren in New York City. Currently, she works in New York City as a merchandising assistant for the Ralph Lauren Ecommerce Buying department.

Phillips

Name: Phillips Workman
School: Clemson University
Major: Political Science and History
Where You've Seen Him: While at Clemson, Phillips played trombone in the Tiger Band and had the opportunity to perform in Death Valley, in the Syracuse Carrier Dome and at the Orange Bowl. He also wrote a weekly football opinion column and provided special political news coverage during the 2012 presidential election for Clemson’s student newspaper, The Tiger.
Professional Development: In addition to graduating summa cum laude, Phillips worked as an intern for Congressman Jack Kingston in 2012 in his Washington, D.C. office. Phillips also served as the first out-of-state intern at the George W. Bush Institute and the Office of George W. Bush in 2015. While an intern, he worked with an ESPN crew on a documentary about the President’s first pitch at the 2001 World Series.
Future Plans: Phillips will begin Law School this fall. Currently, he’s deciding between scholarship offers at several top programs and enjoying his time off.
