Bring in the New Year without Breaking Your Bank

By the time the New Year rolls around, there’s a good chance your wallet is feeling pretty thin. Satisfied with turkey dinners, presents, holiday parties, and more family time than you intended, it’s quite possible that your finances simply can’t withstand another hit. New Year’s Eve is a wonderful time to reminisce on the past year, set goals for the future and ring in the New Year with a celebration. Here are a few ways to save money on New Year’s Eve costs without cutting the fun, whether you stay in or go out.

Going Out

  • Stay in town. Unless you found an amazing deal in the offseason, staying local is the best way to reign in your budget. Las Vegas will still be a blast in the summer, the Rockies will still have spring skiing and the Caribbean is warm year-round.
  • Raid coupon sites like Groupon and Living Social. Find out which restaurants and bars are hosting deals and specials on New Year’s Eve.
  • Go out early. Going out to eat on New Year’s Eve can cost you more than three times as much as any other night. Luckily, plenty of restaurants offer early bird discounts before prime time dining hours begin.
  • Dine smart. If you do go out, make sure to consider all your options. Call around to see which places offer a Prix Fixe menu, or consider sharing several appetizers between your group to avoid an expensive entrée.
  • Attend local festivities. Do some research to see what local events are happening near you. In Atlanta, the Big Peach drops and offers a public space with music, lights, dancing and food. Many other cities have “things that drop” or other attractions.
  • Be safe. Driving drunk just isn’t responsible. A DUI is financially devastating and, more importantly, puts lives at risk. If you choose to drink, even a little, be sure to designate a sober driver before you go out, or arrange to have a taxi or alternative way home.

Staying In

  • Host a small party. STAY in to RING in the New Year! Hosting a small party can not only save you money, it provides a more intimate space to spend time with your friends and family. Consider hosting a potluck to save even more. Everyone will enjoy contributing to the party, and you’ll avoid the crowded crush of restaurants and bars.
  • Be a great host. Don’t be stingy, offer up cheap and easy appetizers like those offered on Delish for a great party.

By skipping the pricey extras, sticking to your budget and exercising a little restraint, it’s quite easy to have your best New Year’s Eve yet. Staying out of debt in December could be the best gift you give yourself in January.
