Insights for January 2019
2019 Philanthropic Fund Recipients Named
We are excited to announce that we have selected our 2019 Philanthropic Fund recipients. Throughout the year, Delta Community will be investing $100,000 in 24 organizations which support metro Atlanta children and families.
A Delta Community employee committee, pictured above, selected the 2019 Philanthropic Fund grant recipients from hundreds of applications received last year. Among the 24 organizations to receive a grant are Atlanta Children’s Shelter, Hands of Hope Clinic, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, YMCA of Metro Atlanta and Horizons at Woodward Academy.
With the award of these 2019 grants, the Delta Community Philanthropic Fund will have invested more than $500,000 in metro Atlanta non-profits since its launch in 2013. You can visit our Philanthropic Fund page for the full list of recipients and more information on how your organization can apply for a grant.
Delta Community on Atlanta & Company
CEO Hank Halter and Business and Community Development Manager Reina Short recently appeared on 11 Alive’s morning show, Atlanta & Company, to discuss our Philanthropic Fund and the 2019 recipients. They were joined by Sushma Barakoti, Executive Director of Refugee Women’s Network and recipient of a 2018 Philanthropic Fund grant.
“The grant from Delta Community’s Philanthropic Fund allowed Refugee Women’s Network to provide refugee and immigrant women with education, job training and other skills which not only help them assimilate into their new lives in the U.S., but also succeed as leaders in their families and in their communities,” said Barakoti.
“We’re committed to investing in the communities we serve,” said Hank. “Our Philanthropic Fund allows us to maintain focus on supporting organizations which share our goals of providing financial literacy and health and humans services to those in need.”
HBCU Scholarship Presented to Fort Valley State Student
In December, Delta Community and Atlanta radio station KISS 104 awarded the final $2,500 HBCU Scholarship of 2018 to Keith Richard of Snellville, Georgia.
Keith is a freshman at Fort Valley State University majoring in supply chain and logistics management and aspires to take his family’s business to the next level. In addition to classes and work, Keith makes time for several extracurricular activities. He has served as a Boy Scout camp leader and a volunteer with the Shop with a Cop program to help children in need. Keith has also played the violin for over five years and is a member of the Fort Valley State cross country and track and field teams.
Throughout 2018, we awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the state of Georgia. The HBCU Scholarship is part of Delta Community’s annual Scholarship Program. Visit our website to learn more about all of the scholarships that we offer.

Delta Community Employees Take a Holiday Flight
Volunteers from Delta Community played the role of Santa’s helpers during Delta Air Lines’ North Pole flights, held in December at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International and Salt Lake City airports. This annual event helps make the holidays brighter for critically-ill patients. The children board a Delta plane and then deplane in an area of the airport transformed to look like the North Pole, where volunteers are dressed like elves and interact with the kids to help make holiday crafts and other treats.
The Atlanta North Pole Flights welcomed patients from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cancer Center patients, while employees from our Salt Lake City Branch spent the day with young patients from Shriner’s Hospital for Children and Primary Children’s Hospital.

Charitable Giving and Volunteering
Charitable giving and employee volunteering are a very important aspect of Delta Community’s culture. We are always committed to making a difference in the communities we serve, especially around the holiday season. Here are a few of the ways that Delta Community has given back this season:
- Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Patient Party - Employee volunteers brought holiday cheer to young patients and their families by making reindeer headbands, decorating Christmas photo frames and making Christmas wreaths and stockings.
- Bloom Closet Donations - For the fourth year, our Human Resources and Corporate Training departments sponsored a family through the Bloom Closet and purchased toys and clothing from the family’s wish list. Corporate Training AVP Pam Paulk says, “We decided several years back that we would like to sponsor a family, and in doing so, we have found it provides us all with a sense of purpose, doing the right thing and fully understanding the meaning of gift giving.”
- Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Toy Donations - Our Accounting Department collected toys and hand delivered them to children who spent Christmas in the hospital.
- Atlanta Community ToolBank Hammers and Ales - Delta Community sponsors this event in December, which supports Atlanta Community ToolBank’s mission of equipping charitable groups and volunteers with tools and resources to compete community outreach projects more efficiently.
- Denim in December for Children’s Miracle Network - During the month of December, employees were able to make a small monetary donation to Children’s Miracle Network and in exchange they were able to wear jeans all month long.
- Toys for Tots - Johnson Ferry Branch Manager Eddie Johnson donated toys on behalf of Delta Community to the Great Toy Drop, hosted by Atlanta Radio station Q100. In addition, we visited Power 96.1’s “Stuff-A-Bus” event to provide multiple toy donations to children in need.
If you’re looking for a way to give back, stop by any of our branches and purchase candy bars, water bottles, piggy banks and more. Purchases benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which includes Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, with pediatric care, education, research and equipment.
